Let’s discuss the common problems we find when we are rebuilding lever blocks.
Roll Pin
One of the common problems that you’re going to see with the parts in the lever block assembly is the roll pin. There is a gear on the pin that only works in a certain area. It never goes 360.
It’s going to have wear in a certain area. In order to see the wear, you have to look at the pin pretty close.
Adjustment Screw
It’s also common to have wear on your adjustment screw. The issue will be in a particular area where you’ll see sharp threads and flattened threads.
Castle Locking Nut
These are typical things you expect to see on the locking nut itself. If you can screw the locking nut all the way on the screw, that means it’s bad.
Roll Retaining Screw
When you look at the royal retaining screw, check threads on it as well. Make sure that the orifice is not blocked. If it is blocked, grease won’t get to the bearings, and you’ll burn that bearing out in about two shifts.
Height Adjusting Screw
Look at the at the threads to see if there’s any flat spots on them or sharpness.
The Roll Condition
First, check the profile. Make sure the bearings are tight and move smoothly and that there’s not going to be rock in those bearings. No rock means no end play. The rolls are titanium coated. Over time, you may start seeing the titanium is chipped or missing. You’re at a point where you may have to replace it.
